Friday Night Magic: Standard
May 22 @ 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm

  • All of our tournaments are Swiss (every player plays every round) unless otherwise noted.
  • Rounds are determined by the number of players that attend (4 or more players is 3 rounds, 9 or more is 4 rounds). We have a hard cap of 5 rounds.
  • Rounds are 50 minutes long.
  • For this tournament, we issue store credit equal to entry fees to the winners. That means if 15 people attend (and therefore we take in $75 in entry fees), we issue $75 in store credit.
WHAT’S IN STANDARD?

Any card printed (or reprinted) in these sets:

The next Standard rotation will be in fall 2020, during which time Guilds of Ravnica, Ravnica Allegiance, War of the Spark, and Core Set 2020 will rotate out.

Friday Night Magic: Modern
May 22 @ 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Friday Night Magic is here! Get your FNM promos and your Modern fix at Next-Gen every Friday. Registration starts at 5PM, event starts at 7:00 PM. Entry is $5.

  • All of our tournaments are Swiss (every player plays every round) unless otherwise noted.
  • For this tournament, we issue store credit equal to entry fees to the winners. That means if 15 people attend (and therefore we take in $75 in entry fees), we issue $75 in store credit. In addition, we will give out one FNM promo pack to the first place winner.
  • Rounds are determined by the number of players that attend; however, on Friday nights we will not run more than 4 rounds to ensure we finish at a reasonable hour. If there are enough players to dictate a necessary 5th round, prize structure changes to be match points-based (8+ match points and above prize out at set amounts for each number of points). This is because with too many players, a winner cannot be decisively determined in 4 rounds to use our usual standings-based prize structure.
  • Rounds are 50 minutes long.

Friday Night Magic: Brawl
May 22 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm

This will be a fairly casual event, much like our commander tournaments on Monday and Wednesday nights. So if you think you’re the Belle Of The Brawl, drop in and join us!

MTG Planeswalker Academy League (13 & Under)
May 24 @ 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Welcome to the NEW Planeswalker Academy League! Unlike previous Planeswalker Academy play, we won’t be focusing on a new sealed event every week. Instead, we’ll be teaching the 13-and-under set how to construct and build on a deck, week by week.

Here’s how it works: your first buy-in is $20, which gets you 3 Magic the Gathering packs and 1 standard deckbox.

Every league event after that, you’ll pay only $5 to receive one new pack to add to the deck you built the week before!

Like our usual Planeswalker Academy events, play will be geared towards kids competing against their peers and guided by our helpful staff–no prior knowledge of Magic the Gathering is required!

Hope to see you then!

Sealed Deck ($25) Sunday
May 24 @ 1:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Want to play sealed? Come on down to Next-Gen every Sunday for a $25 sealed!

PLEASE NOTE: Starting 5/3, we will be raising the price of our Sealed tournament from $20 to $25–however, the added cost won’t be without an added benefit to our players. Instead of the current prize structure where each added player puts more prize packs into a pool, we’ll be moving to a pack per round win structure just like our draft events! So if you only manage to eke out a single win (or a bye!), you won’t be walking away empty-handed.

General Event Info:
• All of our tournaments are Swiss (every player plays every round) unless otherwise noted.
• Rounds are determined by the number of players that attend (4 or more players is 3 rounds, 9+ is 4 rounds, 16+ is 5 rounds.) We never play more than 5 rounds.
• Rounds are 50 minutes long.
• For each event, we will give out packs equal to the number of players that attend. That means if we get 32 people, we’ll give it out 32 packs in prizes, etc. Prizes are in any in-print booster. (Player’s Choice)

D&D Hero Academy SEASON 3 (13 & Under)
May 24 @ 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Join us for a brand-new line up of Dungeons & Dragons events geared towards kids 13 and under: welcome to Hero Academy! Every Sunday, we’ll be hosting a different 5th Edition D&D event meant for kids to learn and play with their peers, under the guidance of our talented staff and community volunteers to facilitate a fun learning environment.

All you need to bring is a pencil with an eraser and a can-do attitude. If you have your own set of polyhedral dice and a tier 1 character (1st-4th level) ready to go, that’s cool too.

Check back periodically for the next wave of events!

Upcoming adventures for Season 3:
Tier 1:
The Sunless Citadel (ongoing)
Tier 2:
Dungeon of the Mad Mage (ongoing)

FAQ:

So, why the price hike?

We thought long and hard about how to keep Hero Academy running going forward. We loved how the $5 price point could bring in a lot of kids who might be priced out of something like our Planeswalker Academy, and it kept things similarly priced to our Wednesday night Adventurers’ League. However, our attendance kept growing, and put too much pressure on our DM Jordan to run by herself.

In order to alleviate some of that pressure, we wanted to bring in more DMs from our wonderful D&D community to allow for more tables–and to do that, we needed to run Hero Academy at a high enough margin to pay those other DMs fairly for their work. In addition to that, we want to start running games weekly, rather than every other week, and planning and coordinating these adventures takes a lot of time behind the scenes.

To make up for the added price, we’ll be extending our hours–running from 2PM to 6PM gives each kid an extra hour to play (although of course we understand if you aren’t able to stay for the whole time). That breaks down to $5 per hour of play! The $20 price also includes a soda or water and a slice of pizza (catered by the lovely Alfredo’s Pizza located right next door!) so no need to worry about your kids getting fed.

Can I drop my kids off and leave during the Hero Academy hours?

Next-Gen Games is not a licensed childcare facility and we cannot ensure that your child stays at the Next-Gen premises. Next-Gen Games does not provide direct supervision for minors; instead, it coordinates players involved with the Hero Academy game session. As long as you keep all this in mind, you are free to drop off your children for the duration of the game.

We will collect a liability waiver from each new player before the beginning of the session, including an emergency phone number we can contact in the case of any problems.

Will you still offer Bigby’s Helping Hand credits to DM helpers?

Thanks in part to the boost from Bigby’s Helping Hand, we now have a roster of accomplished DMs to help us out from week to week. If you’re interested in helping out, please email Jordan at info@nextgenvideogames.com and include “HERO ACADEMY DM” in the subject line.
